Sofia - 10th March 2018

Baba Marta Burzala 4 is an event for children and adults that unites good Bulgarian traditions and sport with solidarity, tolerance and equality. In the Bulgarian tradition, Baba Marta is the name of a mythical figure who brings with her the end of the cold winter and the beginning of the spring. Her holiday is celebrated in Bulgaria on 1st March with the exchange and wearing of martenitsi. Martenitsi are small, coloured bands or figurines that symbolise health and happiness. These pieces of adornment made of white and red yarn are worn from Baba Marta Day until the wearer first sees a stork, swallow, or blossoming tree. Some people then tie their martenitsa to a tree, or put it under a rock.

The Baba Marta Burzala 4 started at 11:00 o’clock in front of the summer stage in the park, where every participant could do their warming up and charge with good energy. The first 100 participants subscribing to the run got a red or white t-shirts and other accessories so that the run was more colourful and entertaining.

After a fun warming up with fun dances and choreographies by Ivan, the run started! It was a great competition in which children, families, men and women participated together enjoying the beautiful sunny day!

When everyone finally arrived, the winners had been called on to the stage and  were awarded with hand-made martenitsa medals. After the awards participants could keep enjoying the day with different fun games and activities for children and adults, as well as with a special program with Bulgarian, Kurdish, Arabic and Afghan songs and dances, prepared by the kids and teenagers from the reception centres of the State agency for refugees - Ovcha Kupel, Vrazhdebna and Voenna Rampa.

The event was a success! We believe that solidarity, tolerance and equality have to be the principles which guide our actions in the days of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and throughout the year - we need action, not just nice words!

Thank you to all the volunteers and the participants for the day together! Save the date for next year Baba Marta Burzala 5th Edition! A day where people come together to share solidarity and this beautiful Bulgarian tradition!
