More than 60 volunteers in search of the Mountain spirit through short and long-term EVS activities in the Balkans in 2018

Led by the idea that small mountain communities and their local organizations face similar challenges when it comes to environmental and social issues, several organizations from the Balkans combined efforts into implementing international volunteer activities.

Branches and partners of SCI in Europe are going to host and send more than 70 volunteers in the next 2 years as EVS volunteers in Croatia, Kosovo, Bulgaria and Serbia. Mountain spirit is a strategic EVS project for nature conservation supported by international volunteers.

Five short-term group EVS activities will happen in summer of 2018. From 2 weeks to 2 months groups of volunteers will be helping with restoring educational facilities destroyed by village fire in Bulgaria; removing shrubs and bushes to support conservation efforts for the last couple of imperial eagles in Serbia; studying and preparing public event and a publication about 40 years of Kuterevo spirit and UNESCO Man and biosphere program in Velebit; exploring and documenting biodiversity in Kosovo and supporting everyday and educational activities in Bear Sactuary Prishtina, Kosovo. You will be able to follow the adventures of the volunteers in their blog:

If you represent an accredited sending organization from Erasmus+ program country, feel free to promote the calls.

The idea of Kuterevo Spirit is what brought Velebit Association Kuterevo, GAIA Kosovo, Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia, Four Paws Kosovo and Vlahi Nature School Bulgaria together in a try to study, spread and implement values and methods for working for nature, with nature and in nature. Some of the partners include SCI Catalunya, SCI Italy, VCV Serbia, CVS-Bulgaria, EDEN Center Albania, OWA Poland, Grüner Grashalm, ASPEA Portugal, Zavod Voluntariat Slovenia, Polar Star Scout group.

From 20 to 25th of March 15 representatives of the hosting and sending organizations met in Kuterevo to “kick the project off”. A kick off meeting, which was much more than just an event for planning and assigning tasks, and here you can read what was different. We are looking forward to the upcoming intense summer of volunteer activities and already planning a Partnership Building Activity in November in Kosovo.
