How to become a mentor

April 2026

In April, SCI MIDI working group organised a training for mentors in collaboration with SCI partners from Morocco, Tunisia, Palestine and Jordan. Since more SCI branches are organising long term volunteer projects, trained mentors guarantee a better volunteering pathway for the long term volunteers. The training hosted by VSF Tunisia brought together 24 (potential) mentors from 8 different countries. One of them, Dalia Yasin, gives us some insight in the training week.
Training of Mentors in Hammamet
The Training of Mentors in Hammamet was a highly enriching experience, both in terms of the diversity of participants and the depth of the content covered over five days.
Participants came from different organizations, with varied levels of experience and backgrounds, which created a dynamic and insightful learning environment.
The program began with ice-breaking and introductory sessions focused on long-term volunteering, including its challenges and possible solutions. Participants shared their own experiences in both long-term and short-term volunteering, as well as their journeys as mentors, helping to build a strong common foundation.
Following this, we explored the full cycle of volunteering, from the arrival of the volunteer to their return home after 6 to 12 months. We also discussed the role of mentors throughout this journey, identifying the key values and skills required. These included technical, logistical, and emotional support, all of which are essential to effectively guide volunteers.
The training also included important discussions on decolonizing long-term volunteering at both individual and organizational levels. Additionally, we addressed sensitive topics such as female genital mutilation, encouraging open dialogue and reflection.
One of the highlights of the training was a study visit to Tunis, where we met with two associations: France Volontaires and Farah Space. This visit provided valuable insights into their missions, local and international networks, and the activities they carry out to support volunteers and local communities.
On the final day, we had a comprehensive wrap-up of all the topics covered, along with an evaluation session. Participants shared recommendations and suggestions aimed at improving our future work and strengthening our journeys on individual, regional, and international levels within our organizations.
