We are proud to announce that SCI has become an official partner of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). This partnership reaffirms SCI’s commitment to peace and antimilitarism in the face of growing global threats. As part of ICAN, we will work within a strong coalition of organisations campaigning to abolish nuclear weapons worldwide.

ICAN, a global coalition of over 600 non-governmental organisations, has led the movement for nuclear disarmament since its beginning. Its mission centres around the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), the only international treaty that comprehensively prohibits the use and threat of nuclear weapons. Adopted in New York on July 7, 2017, and legally enforced on January 22, 2021, the TPNW wasa landmark achievement toward a nuclear-free world. ICAN’s work to promote this treaty and draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons earned it the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.

SCI’s involvement in this partnership is rooted in its antimilitarist origins. Our movement began with Pierre Ceresole’s vision to provide an alternative to military service. In 2023, activists within SCI re-formed the No More War group, and have since been organising actions to strengthen and bring visibility to antimilitarist activism in SCI and beyond. This partnership with ICAN will enable SCI to amplify nuclear disarmament messages to young people and other groups typically less engaged in this critical global issue.

Nuclear weapons, like climate change and pandemics, present a severe global risk that demands collective action. SCI’s work on the topic, including our social media campaign during the 2022 International Day of Peace, will continue to educate and mobilise volunteers on this issue.

Any non-governmental organisation is eligible to become an ICAN partner, with no fees required. Partner organisations endorse ICAN’s partnership pledge and abide by its values and code of conduct. Financial or other contributions to the cause are welcomed. This partnership marks an important step for SCI, as we work alongside ICAN and other major peace organisations to take steps towards our vision of a world of peace, social justice and sustainable development, where all people live together with mutual respect and without recourse to any form of violence to solve conflict.
